Fire simulation and fireproof design

In public space, 1-hour or above fire-endurance facilities to be installed every 1500 square meters are required by the Article 79 in "Architecture Technical Regulation". However, the underground or subways stations have difficulties to meet such requirements. Therefore, they can submit a "fire protection and evacuation design (fire-safety performance-based design) proposal" to the Ministry of Interior for review. For general buildings, "fire protection and safe evacuation assessment" should follow the standards of "Technical Handbook for Building Fire Protection and Safe Evacuation". In both the cases, smoke movement/control simulation is demanded. This modeling serves as an optimization design tool in fire protection engineering to prevent the occupants from fire and smoke risks in the evacuation route pathways. Moreover, the modeling can certify the smoke control performance of a building under a specific space allocation, usage, and relevant fire protection and ventilation facilities. It also ensures a safe evacuation under the NFPA-130 time requirement.

Water mist fire extinguishing experiments

In the performance evaluation of water mist fire extinguishing system on wet bench, the experimental parameters include: working pressure, pool fire size, location of water mist sprinkler head, obstacles, and openness of doors. Designs with suitable working pressure and locations of sprinkler heads can effectively put out fires in the earlier stage. This study suggests that the sprinkler heads can be installed right above or on the two sides of the chemical basin to ensure that the fires can be fully covered by the water mist. Moreover, correct positions can also provide enough downward momentum for water mist to put out early fires and prevent fire propagation.
