Slope Movement Mechanism Analysis and Monitoring System Deployment for Hungtsaiping Landslide(1/2)

The Hungtsaiping Landslide covers an area of hundreds of hectors. The sliding mechanisms are complicated; it is highly challengeable whether we make our observations from geomorphology, ground movement, or analyses from mechanical points of view. It would be beneficiary to the mitigation of geological hazards for our country if an effective monitoring and safety analysis system can be established for this type of landslides. The research area includes the landslide triggered by the Chi Chi Earthquake, as planned by the Bureau of Central Geological Survey in 2004. Newly developed fiber optic ground displacement and water pressure/level sensing systems coupled with remote sensing and other imaging techniques were used to monitor the status of the landslide from below and above the ground surface, respectively. Major tasks included a series of borehole drilling, rock core mechanical testing, slope stability/deformation analyses, monitoring system installations, GPS surveys, and satellite image analyses.
